Why calcium and vitamin D are formulated together
Vitamin D is what allows calcium to be absorbed from the gut. Without enough of it, a good proportion of the calcium you swallow is simply passed out again.
This matters particularly in Pakistan, where low vitamin D is common despite the sunshine. Taking calcium alone while vitamin D is low is one of the more common wasted supplements. Our note on why sunshine is not enough here explains the reasons.
What these contribute to
-
Calcium — the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission, and normal blood clotting.
-
Vitamin D3 — normal absorption and utilisation of calcium, the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function, and normal immune function.
-
Zinc — the maintenance of normal bones, normal immune function, and protection of cells from oxidative stress.
What a supplement will not do on its own
Bone responds to load. Weight-bearing exercise — walking, stairs, carrying things, resistance work — signals bone to maintain density in a way no tablet can replicate. A calcium supplement supports that; it does not substitute for it.
Food first as well: dairy, sesame and til, leafy greens, small fish eaten with the bones, and chickpeas all contribute. Our note on calcium, D3 and what actually matters covers the full picture.
How to take it
- One tablet daily with water, after food, or as directed by your doctor.
- If you take more than one calcium dose a day, split them. The body absorbs calcium better in smaller amounts than all at once.
- Space it a couple of hours apart from iron supplements, thyroid medication and certain antibiotics.
- Do not exceed the stated dose.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Anyone with kidney disease or a history of kidney stones.
- Anyone with high blood calcium or a parathyroid condition.
- Anyone taking thyroid medication, bisphosphonates, diuretics or digoxin.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
