A daily zinc tablet. Zinc is an essential trace mineral, which means the body cannot make it and does not store much of it, so intake has to be regular.

Made at our own facility on Adiyala Road, Rawalpindi, where we have been formulating since 1998. The zinc content per tablet, DRAP enlistment number, batch number and expiry date are printed on every pack.

What zinc contributes to

Zinc has an unusually long list of established claims, because it is involved in a very large number of enzyme reactions:

• Normal function of the immune system
• The maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails
• Normal DNA and protein synthesis
• Normal macronutrient, carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism
• Normal cognitive function and normal vision
• The protection of cells from oxidative stress
• Normal fertility and reproduction, and normal testosterone levels in the blood
• A role in the process of cell division

The thing most zinc products do not tell you

Zinc and copper compete for the same absorption pathway. Taking zinc on its own at a reasonable dose is fine, but taking high-dose zinc continuously for months can gradually lower copper status, and the early signs are vague enough to be missed.

This is not a reason to avoid zinc. It is a reason to stick to the stated dose and not to take it indefinitely without a reason. Our note on why zinc and copper belong together explains the balance.

How to take it

• One tablet daily with water, after food.
• Taking it on an empty stomach is the usual cause of nausea with zinc.
• Space it a couple of hours apart from iron or calcium supplements, and from certain antibiotics, as minerals compete for absorption.
• Do not exceed the stated dose.

Food first

Zinc is in meat, shellfish, chickpeas, lentils, pumpkin seeds, cashews and dairy. A diet built largely on refined grains tends to fall short, and phytates in grains and pulses reduce absorption, which is why intake can be low even when the food is there.

Who should check with a doctor first

• Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Anyone taking antibiotics, particularly tetracyclines or quinolones.
• Anyone already taking a multivitamin, to avoid doubling up without realising.
• Anyone planning to take it for longer than a few months.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
