An omega-3 syrup with vitamins A, C and D, 240ml. A syrup rather than a capsule, which makes it suitable for children and for anyone who cannot swallow softgels.
Made at our own facility on Adiyala Road, Rawalpindi, where we have been formulating since 1998. The omega-3 content per measured dose, the DRAP enlistment number, batch number and expiry date are printed on the pack.
The number to look for on any omega-3 product
Not the total oil. The weight of the oil tells you almost nothing; what matters is the EPA and DHA content per dose, which is a fraction of it and varies enormously between products.
So when you compare this with anything else, find the EPA and DHA figures per serving and work out the cost per day of that amount. Our guide to reading an EPA and DHA label explains why this is the single most misunderstood thing in the category.
What these contribute to
-
EPA and DHA — the normal function of the heart. DHA also contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.
-
Vitamin A — the maintenance of normal vision, normal skin and mucous membranes, and normal immune function.
-
Vitamin C — normal immune function, normal collagen formation, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and increased iron absorption.
-
Vitamin D — normal absorption of calcium, the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function, and normal immune function.
What it is not is a treatment for heart disease, poor concentration or anything else. Research continues in those areas and the results are genuinely mixed. A food supplement supports normal function.
Omega-3 oils are perishable. This matters here.
Fish oil oxidises on exposure to heat, light and air, and oxidised oil is both unpleasant and pointless. In a Pakistani summer that is a real consideration, not a technicality.
- A sharp, strong fishy smell on opening means it has turned. Fresh fish oil smells mild.
- Refrigerate after opening and finish within the period stated on the pack.
- Keep it away from the kitchen window and the top of the fridge, which is warmer than people assume.
- Buy a size you will actually finish.
How to take it
- Measure with the cup or spoon supplied, not a kitchen spoon.
- Follow the dose on the pack, or as directed by your doctor. Check the age range before giving it to a child.
- Take with food. Taking omega-3 on an empty stomach is the usual cause of fishy repeats.
- Shake before use.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Anyone taking blood-thinning medication such as warfarin.
- Anyone due for surgery, who should mention it beforehand.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, particularly because of the vitamin A content.
- Anyone with a fish or shellfish allergy.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Refrigerate after opening. Keep out of reach of children.
