What vitamin D contributes to
- Normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
- Normal blood calcium levels
- The maintenance of normal bones and teeth
- The maintenance of normal muscle function
- Normal function of the immune system
Why a Pakistani product, specifically
Low vitamin D is common here despite the sunshine, and the reasons are local: most people work indoors, clothing covers the skin, the hottest hours are precisely the ones people avoid, and sunscreen — which you should still wear — blocks the wavelength that makes vitamin D. Melanin, which is protective, also slows production. So "get more sun" is not the straightforward answer it sounds like.
Our note on why sunshine is not enough in Pakistan explains this in full.
Dosing, and why you should test first
At 4,000 IU per 0.05 ml this is concentrated, and the correct dose depends entirely on your blood level. A 25-hydroxyvitamin D test is inexpensive and widely available here.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means it is stored rather than passed out. Taking a high-strength preparation indefinitely without testing is how people end up with too much, and excess vitamin D raises blood calcium, which is genuinely harmful.
- Take the dose your doctor specifies, measured with the dropper provided.
- Take it with a meal containing some fat, which improves absorption.
- Do not estimate by eye, and do not use a kitchen spoon.
- Have your level rechecked rather than continuing indefinitely.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Everyone, for this strength. That is not a formality.
- Anyone with kidney disease, high blood calcium, sarcoidosis or a history of kidney stones.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone giving it to a child, where dosing is different and must be set by a doctor.
- Anyone taking thiazide diuretics or digoxin.
