Vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin, 1000 mcg per tablet. A high oral dose, and deliberately so — the reason is explained below.
Made at our own facility on Adiyala Road, Rawalpindi, where we have been formulating since 1998. The DRAP enlistment number, batch number and expiry date are printed on every pack.
What B12 contributes to
These are the established claims, and they are the only ones we will make:
- Normal red blood cell formation
- Normal functioning of the nervous system
- Normal homocysteine metabolism
- Normal energy-yielding metabolism
- The reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Normal psychological function
- Normal function of the immune system
The tiredness claim needs a caveat we would rather give you up front. B12 reduces tiredness if you are short of it. If your levels are already adequate, more will not give you extra energy.
Why the dose is 1000 mcg
Far above the daily requirement, which looks odd until you know how absorption works. Most B12 is absorbed through a receptor system that saturates easily. A small additional percentage crosses by simple diffusion regardless, and that fraction is why oral doses are set high. It is also why most people absorb enough from tablets without needing injections.
Who is actually likely to be low
- Vegetarians, and vegans especially, since B12 occurs naturally only in animal foods
- Anyone over sixty, as stomach acid declines with age
- Anyone on long-term metformin
- Anyone on long-term omeprazole or similar acid-reducing medication
- Anyone with coeliac disease or Crohn's, or who has had stomach or bowel surgery
A serum B12 test is inexpensive here. Testing first tells you whether B12 is actually your problem and gives you a baseline. Our note on who actually needs a B12 supplement goes through this properly.
How to take it
One tablet daily with water, or as advised by your doctor. Pack size: 30 tablets.
B12 is water-soluble, so excess is passed out rather than stored, which is why it has a good safety record.
Who should check with a doctor first
- Anyone with numbness, tingling or unsteadiness. Nerve damage from prolonged deficiency can become permanent, so this needs diagnosing rather than self-treating.
- Anyone already diagnosed with anaemia, so the cause is established first.
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
