Why lips dry out faster than the rest of your face

Lip skin is far thinner than facial skin and has no oil glands of its own. It cannot produce the sebum that keeps the rest of your face from drying out, so it depends entirely on what you put on it. That is why lips are the first thing to crack in cold, dry or windy weather, and in an air-conditioned office.

What is in it, and what each one does

• Shea butter — a rich emollient that sits on the surface and slows water loss.
• Natural oils — soften and condition.
• Vitamin E — an antioxidant, and it helps keep the oils in the balm stable.

How to use it

• Apply as often as you need, and particularly before going out in cold or wind, and before bed.
• Reapply after eating or drinking.
• Do not lick your lips. Saliva evaporates and takes moisture with it, which is why licking makes chapping worse and creates a cycle.
• If your lips are badly cracked, apply a thicker layer at night and leave it.

Two things worth knowing

Lips burn. They have little melanin and are easy to forget, so use a lip product with SPF for long periods outdoors. A balm without sun protection does not protect against UV.

Persistently cracked lips are not always just dryness. Cracking at the corners of the mouth can relate to low iron or B vitamins, and dry lips are a common early sign of simple dehydration. If a balm is not fixing it after a couple of weeks, that is worth noticing rather than buying a stronger balm.

Care

For external use only. Stop if irritation occurs. Do not use on broken or bleeding skin. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
